Cheapest Way to Ship from China 2026: Lines, Volumetric Weight & Consolidation

We logged real parcel costs across every shipping line type — budget postal, sea-air, express and tax-inclusive — to find the cheapest way to ship from China at each weight bracket. The answer changes with your parcel, and volumetric weight is the trap.

What actually drives your shipping cost

Three variables decide your freight bill: billable weight, the line you choose, and how many parcels you ship. Billable weight is whichever is greater — scale weight or volumetric weight. The line sets the per-kilogram rate and the delivery speed. And parcel count multiplies everything, because every parcel pays its own first-kilogram premium.

Most buyers obsess over the line and ignore the other two. In our logged parcels, packaging and consolidation choices moved the bill more than the choice between lines ever did.

The shipping line types compared

  • Budget postal — the cheapest per kilogram, and the slowest. Our 0.9 kg t-shirt parcel cost ¥54 and took 31 days door to door. Tracking is basic, and patience is mandatory.
  • Tax-free sea-air — the middle ground. Our 2.1 kg sneaker parcel cost ¥118 and landed in 19 days. Slower than express, far cheaper on mid-weight parcels.
  • Express — the fast lane. Our 3.4 kg jacket parcel cost ¥212 and arrived in 9 days.
  • Tax-inclusive express — express speed with customs handled under the line operator’s own IOSS registration, so no surprise VAT payment at your door. For EU buyers this removes the biggest delivery-day unknown.

Volumetric weight: the hidden multiplier

Every line bills on volumetric weight when it exceeds scale weight: length × width × height in centimeters, divided by 5000. A pair of sneakers that weighs 1.2 kg on a scale can bill as 2.5–3 kg once the retail box is measured. This single rule explains most "shipping cost more than the item" stories.

The fix is free: ask the warehouse to remove shoe boxes and flatten packaging before consolidation. Our sneaker parcel billed on 3.0 kg volumetric instead of 2.1 kg actual — dropping the box would have cut the freight bill by nearly a third.

Pro tip: Run the volumetric calculation before you buy, not before you ship. If a bulky item only makes sense at scale weight, knowing that before ordering saves you from a freight surprise you can no longer avoid.

Consolidation: the single biggest saving

Freight pricing has a heavy first-kilogram component, so one 3 kg parcel costs dramatically less than three 1 kg parcels on the same line. Every item you add to a consolidated parcel rides at the cheaper incremental rate. This is why experienced buyers batch orders over weeks, let everything accumulate in the warehouse, and ship once.

Storage is the enabler: agents hold your items in the warehouse for a free storage window, so you can order from five sellers across a month and still ship a single parcel.

The cheapest strategy by parcel weight

  • Under 1 kg — budget postal. The savings over faster lines are largest in this bracket and the wait is tolerable for light, cheap items.
  • 1–3 kg — compare sea-air against express on the day you ship; rates shift, and coupons can flip the winner. This is the most competitive bracket.
  • Over 3 kg — price the tax-inclusive express line seriously. On heavy parcels the per-kg rate drops, and for EU destinations the included customs clearance is worth real money and zero doorstep surprises.
  • Any weight, boxed shoes — remove the boxes first, then re-price. The cheapest line is irrelevant if you are billing air.

When the cheapest option is not worth it

Budget lines trade money for time and certainty. If your parcel is time-sensitive, high-value, or going somewhere with strict customs, the cheapest line is the most expensive mistake: a month of waiting, thin tracking, and a possible VAT bill on arrival. Price the total outcome — freight plus customs risk plus your patience — not the freight line alone.
